ARW Blogging Assignment 6 (OMS)

The most useful in critically analyzing The Old man and the Sea by Ernest Hemmingway is Santiago as a Christ Figure. I think this approach is most appropriate because there are many evidences that Santiago represents Christ Figure in the story. First, Christ sacrificed his life to cover the guilt of all people. Like him, Santiago tries to get the big fish for dear his life even though the trying is very difficult and dangerous. So the old man and Christ are alike in being willing to do the crucial things. Second, Christ was crucified and his hands were hurt. Santiago's hands injured too in the middle of fishing the big fish. So the injured his hands represents Christ. Third, Christ is loved and believed by people in the world. Like him, Santiago is loved and respected by Manolin. In the town, there are great fishermen except for Santiago. However Manolin says to him " The best fisherman is you ". So both people are alike in person who is great and reliable person and loved from people. I think this approach is most appropriate by the above evidences and reasons.

" Meeting Simulation The Desert Island "



I chose the following 12 items.

I think that first to get the food and to survive is vital so, items of food category are most important and I choose 1~5 items. A large cooking pot is useful to pump the water. Second, items of house category is important, so I choose 6, 7 items. These items are good to make a house. Then, people can use a lamp to grad them at night. Third, items of health category are important, so I choose 9, 10 items. Forth, items of recreation category are necessary, so I choose 11, 12 items. People can record the memory in the desert island by a type record. And they can travel around the island by riding a horse. The move in the desert is hard for people so, it is help people to move. By riding a horse, people can run away from the dangerous animals.
I choose these items by the above reasons.

ARW Blogging Assignment 5 (OMS)

The main characters in Old Man and the Sea are Santiago, a fisherman and Manolin, a boy who helps him. Three adjectives that describe Santiago are passionate, inpatient, and humble. First, he has passion of getting big fish though he is old, so he is passionate. Second, he endured even he hadn't fished for 87 days, so he is inpatient. Third, he didn't mind that his pride was damaged and got sardines from boy. He leaned humility naturally, so he is humble. Two adjectives that describe Manolin are curious and kind. First, he said that he wanted to go to the sea with old man though his parents didn't permit him to do. And fishing is sometimes dangerous, but he requested old man to took him to the sea. So, he is curious. Second, it was kind of him to spread blanket over the sleeping old man and to help him with preparation of fishing. He also cared about the old man, calling to go to the bed early and asking whether he had finished eating. So, he is kind.

ASP Assignment 5/21 class

I learned about the way of presentation in 5/21 class. In presentation, there are three important things. First, content is important. It is information. To present well, we should gather many informations, and in addition, they should be high quality. Second, structure is important. It means order. In general, the following order is used in presentation.

1. Greeting
2. Thanks audience
3. Self introduction ( name/background )
4. Topic introduction ( theme/topic )
5. Outline
6. Body ※more informations
7. Summary&Conclusion
8. Question time
9. Thank you

3( background ) need be connected with 4. This is because connection establishes credibility. Third, delivery is important. Delivery is attitude for presentation. We should speak , making eye contact. It is good to make eye contact for 5 minutes. We should not read manuscript.

I practiced this way of presentation in ARW class. It was very helpful for me. I want to be good at presentation.

ASP Assignment " The desert survival problem "

My score was 66 and my group score was 26.

In our group, we concluded that people should not escape from the desert but should stay there and request the help. Because, to escape from the desert is very dangerous. So we thought how survive.

We thought that food and drink are most important to survive. Next, we thought tools are important which is helpful for asking the help. For example, Plastic rain coat, Parachute, and Torch. It is nice for people to use them like flags. We thought that these tools become sign which people are there.

ASP Assignment 5/7 Class Discussion

We discussed about " Who is the first man who should be rescued ? " In our group, there were some opinions from different perspectives. Some people told that John Jones should be rescued first, because he is the youngest, others told that Geoft Tims should be rescued first, because he is oldest and he also owns a factory that employs 500 people. So, if he dies, his factory will be disturb. There were opinions that John has futures, but Geft's life is a few and he already have enjoyed his life. In another opinion, some people told that Tom Jones should be rescued first, because he is young and has asthma. We thought that we should consider people who has disease.



We discussed about this theme from various perspective and consider " what should we give priority ? " We found priority such as age, gender, and background. Backgrounds are disease or contribution for society. We conclude that we should consider age, because it is the most fair ideas. Perhaps some people think that it is unfair. So it is very difficult to conclude in this theme , because how people give priority varies from country to country.

We discuss about following theme in 4.27 class.


1. "In discussion, should we shock someone who don't speak their opinion?"
All members of my group disagreed with this opinion. This is because it is bad to compel someone who don't speak their opinions to speak them by punishment. We thought that in discussion, it is very important to speak our opinions voluntarily. Otherwise, we can't discuss vitally and thoughtfully. Compulsory discussion isn't benefit. So, we should think the different way ,not punishment, that makes silent people speak voluntarily.

2. "In the Japan, 50% of population is women, why are women who work in government only 10%?"
In our group, we thought that women who work in government are only 10%, because, institution of the past that women are weaker than men remain still. In the past, women didn't have the right for election. But society should be equality for both men and women. So, we should make environment that women can work comfortably to change this situation.

ASP Video Comments

I think that it is important that everybody cooperates and join discussion actively. In example of bad discussion, everybody are passive for discussion, for example, someone don't listen to the other people's opinions and looks the other way and does different works. There are people who don't concentrate on discussion. I think that speaker's opinions are not treasured though speakers speak their opinions hardly. So, this discussion is bored and not benefit.


While in example of good discussion, everybody are active for discussion, so this discussion is very benefit. They listen to the other people's opinion steadily and response them. All people speak their opinions, and this discussion is equal because, reader also lead discussion well. So, they can discuss smoothly. I think this discussion is very good , and I want to became to discuss like this.


I find it very important that in discussion, everybody speaks actively and cooperates, not depend on other people. If we do this, our discussion will be very benefit. So I think that I try to join discussion actively.

Good discussion is constructed of clear point and good evidence. And speakers speak from different perspectives. While bad discussion is constructed of unclear point and obscure evidence. And speakers speak one-side oppinion.


About English language in Japan

[Agree] What children in Japan learn English is good oppinion. Because the younger children are, the e arlier they learn it. Beyond question, it is important for children to learn naitive language steadily,but today, English is communication tool in business,and it is very necessary in global society. So, children should learn English for their futures.

[Disagree] What children in Japan learn English is bad opinion. Because it is very important for them to learn naitive language and to learn other subjects, for example, math, science, society, music,and art.



About Age of Adult

19 or 20 appropriate age for adult. Adult means independent from parents. Most of the 19 or 20 years old people begin live ourselves to go to the college. They have to do homework when start living ourselves. They also have to take full responsibility.

ARW Essay 1

The thesis statement I've chosen for essay 1 is the following: The most important thing of academic learning is to motivate ourselve. This is because motivating ourselves lead to setting our goals, and we can step up. If we don't motivate ourselves, we will feel that academic learning is tiring and hard and we will set low level goals. So, we will not improve ourselves.

According to Meiland, a "good" college teachers present information in the following way. In general, they present some information, in the sense of "what is currently believed." However, they also spend much time talking about the basis on which this information is currently believed. So, they make their students discuss and examaine the basis of current beliefs. They does'nt treat material as unchanging fact. They treat it as beliefs or conclusions that have been reached on the basis of investigations. They want their students to learn new types of intellectual work are required at the college level to do these things.

I agree with these way. Because I think that for college students to learn what is currently believed is very important. In the future, they have to consider imformations is currently believed. So, they should do this whe they are college students.
